Incubation

Temperature, humidity, and timeline guidance for incubating Stinkpot Turtle eggs.

Temperature

78โ€“86ยฐF (26โ€“30ยฐC)

Humidity

80โ€“95%

Incubation Period

55โ€“90 days

Breeding season:Spring through summer
Egg Care

Incubate eggs in damp sphagnum moss or vermiculite. Semi-aquatic eggs require high humidity but should not be submerged. For turtle/tortoise eggs, do not rotate โ€” mark the top with a pencil to maintain orientation.

Incubation Notes

Turtle and tortoise eggs are often temperature-sex dependent: lower temps (~78ยฐF) produce males, higher temps (~86ยฐF+) produce females. Keep incubation medium moist but not waterlogged.

Hatchling & Baby Care

Housing

For aquatic hatchlings, provide shallow water (deeper than the shell is long) with an easy-exit dry dock. For semi-aquatic species, use a divided land/water setup. Include a basking platform and UVB.

Baby Temperature

Basking surface 88โ€“95ยฐF, water 78โ€“82ยฐF, ambient 80โ€“85ยฐF

Feeding

Feed small insects (bloodworms, pinhead crickets), tiny fish, or aquatic turtle pellets daily. For omnivores, supplement with duckweed or small greens. Dust with calcium + D3 regularly.

Baby Care Notes

Water quality is critical for aquatic hatchlings โ€” use a gentle filter or do frequent partial water changes. Provide UVB from day one for proper shell development. Monitor for shell pyramiding and adjust diet/protein accordingly.
