About this species

Named for the crest of hair-like projections above its eyes running down its back. Once thought extinct, it was rediscovered in 1994 and is now popular in captivity.

Enrichment & behavioral stimulation

Arboreal and nocturnal — enrichment focuses on climbing, jumping, and foraging across vertical space.

  • Provide varied vertical structure: tall cork bark, bamboo, and leafy plants to encourage climbing and jumping.
  • Offer crested gecko diet (CGD) on multiple elevated feeding ledges at different heights.
  • Mist the enclosure in the evening to stimulate drinking and raise humidity for natural activity.
  • Rotate foliage and branch positions periodically to create new pathways and novelty.
  • Scatter small live insects among foliage at night to promote arboreal hunting.
  • Include broad leaves the gecko can rest beneath to mimic daytime canopy hiding.

Housing & Social Behavior

Variable

Best kept alone; males must never be housed together; breeding pairs require close supervision.

Housing guidance is general and based on species-typical behavior; always verify against current husbandry references and observe individual temperament.
