About this species
A small lizard covered in sharp spines. Has a remarkable false head on its neck and collects water through capillary action.
Enrichment & behavioral stimulation
Thorny Devil is aquatic or semi-aquatic — enrichment combines a large water area, basking, and foraging.
- Provide a large, clean water area for swimming and soaking.
- Add a sturdy dry basking platform under heat and UV.
- Include branches or ramps over the water for climbing and patrolling.
- Scatter insects and offer food at different spots and times to extend activity.
- Vary feeder types and sizes to keep feeding engaging.
- Provide a secure dry hide out of the water.
Housing & Social Behavior
Avoid cohabitation as they are highly territorial and require vast areas to forage.
Housing guidance is general and based on species-typical behavior; always verify against current husbandry references and observe individual temperament.
