About this species

A ground-dwelling gecko known for its spotted leopard-like pattern and movable eyelids. Unlike most geckos, it has claws instead of sticky toe pads, reflecting its terrestrial lifestyle.

Enrichment & behavioral stimulation

Ground-dwelling and nocturnal — enrichment should encourage foraging, digging, and secure exploration rather than climbing.

  • Scatter-feed live insects into the enclosure instead of tong-feeding so the gecko tracks and hunts them.
  • Offer a dig box of safe, loose substrate (organic topsoil/sand mix) to satisfy natural burrowing.
  • Keep a humid hide, a warm dry hide, and a cool hide to support thermoregulation and shedding.
  • Add low, sturdy rocks and cork bark pieces to create new exploration routes and rubbing surfaces.
  • Use puzzle or slow-feeders to extend activity time and prevent overeating.
  • Occasionally rearrange decor to create novelty and encourage investigation.

Housing & Social Behavior

Solitary

Highly territorial and prone to fighting; best kept alone to avoid injury.

Housing guidance is general and based on species-typical behavior; always verify against current husbandry references and observe individual temperament.
