Incubation
Temperature, humidity, and timeline guidance for incubating Shield-nosed Snake eggs.
80โ88ยฐF (27โ31ยฐC)
65โ80%
45โ75 days
Incubate eggs in moistened vermiculite (1:1 by weight with water). Keep sealed with weekly air exchange. Do not rotate eggs โ maintain original orientation throughout incubation.
Some rocky-habitat species have temperature-dependent sex determination. Keep a stable incubator temperature for predictable results. Avoid temps above 90ยฐF which can be lethal to embryos.
Hatchling & Baby Care
House hatchlings in 10โ20 gal enclosures with paper towel or excavator clay substrate. Provide rock crevices and small caves for security, a basking platform, and a shallow water dish.
Basking surface 95โ100ยฐF, warm ambient 85โ90ยฐF, cool side 75โ80ยฐF
Feed pinhead crickets or small dubia roaches daily. Prey size should match the space between the hatchling's eyes. Dust with calcium + D3 every feeding and a multivitamin once weekly.
Rocky-habitat hatchlings benefit from securely stacked small rocks for hiding and thermoregulation. Ensure no loose stones can shift and trap the baby. Provide a humid hide for shedding support.
