Ferguson Zone & UVB
The Ferguson Zone system categorizes reptiles by their natural UVB exposure needs, guiding lighting choices.
Grassland species are active sun baskers. Provide moderate UVB (10% T5) across half the enclosure with both open basking and shaded retreats.

Crepuscular / Shade
Zone 2
Occasional Basker
Zone 3

Lighting & Photoperiod
10% T5 HO UVB bulb over half the enclosure. Halogen basking bulb. 12โ14 hr photoperiod in warm months, 10โ12 hr in cool months.
Heating
Overhead halogen basking bulb. Ceramic heat emitter for supplemental nighttime heat if temperatures drop below 65ยฐF.
Decor & Furnishings
- โขBasking rocks and logs
- โขCork bark or half-log hides on both ends
- โขRocks for structure and stacking
- โขLeaf litter for natural cover
- โขShallow water dish
Setup Notes
Provide a thermal gradient from hot basking spot to cooler end. Offer multiple hides so the reptile can thermoregulate while feeling secure. Leaf litter supports cleanup crew in bioactive setups.
