Giant Day Gecko
Phelsuma grandis
Tropical rainforest trees and human dwellings in humid coastal areas.
Northern Madagascar, introduced to Florida and other tropical regions
10-12 in (25-30 cm)
Insects, nectar, fruit
About this species
A vivid bright green day-active gecko with red markings. Like all day geckos, it has round pupils and sticky toe pads for climbing smooth surfaces.
Enrichment & behavioral stimulation
Diurnal and brightly colored โ enrichment emphasizes basking, visual stimuli, and arboreal nectar/fruit foraging.
- Provide broad vertical bamboo and tall plants for basking and climbing under full-spectrum light.
- Offer fruit-based gecko diet and occasional nectar substitutes at elevated feeding stations.
- Ensure adequate UVB lighting for basking; day geckos are active and visually oriented during daylight.
- Add smooth vertical surfaces (bamboo, broad leaves) they can cling to and patrol.
- Scatter small live insects among foliage to encourage active daytime hunting.
Housing & Social Behavior
Males can be aggressive; pairs are safer, though large enclosures may accommodate groups.
Housing guidance is general and based on species-typical behavior; always verify against current husbandry references and observe individual temperament.
